"Transfigured," 2008, oil and iridescence leaf on linen, 28"x48"

The recent work has often required a full measure of patience along with a willingness to allow radical change. Begun in 2004, by early 2008 this was another dark canvas that had seen three different studios. Maybe clear fall sun streaming through the skylights inspired a different potential. After nearly four years, it took just days to cover most of the darkest marks in the painting with a thin layer of the best iridescent blue.

The studio doors will be open Saturday and Sunday, September 27 and 28, from noon to 7 PM as part of the 2008 Art Under the Bridge Festival.

The annual event is put together by the Dumbo Arts Center and draws as many as 150,000 visitors to this unique neighborhood. The festival includes a wide variety of public performance and temporary art installations, as well as roughly 100 open studios. “Valley Floor” was made while sitting on a deck of a beach house on Fire Island. Cedar, the 4 year old in charge of the place, was watching very carefully. Then she sat down and made her own:

"The Pollard," 2008, oil on linen, 48"x60"

This painting was finished in early March. The changes in the week or two right before that point were pretty dramatic. It had been a dark painting for months. The inspiration right at the end came from a very beat up street tree that I walk by every morning between the house and the subway. Then just piles of white paint and the lights came on.

These artists reference the moody paintings of artists such as Ryder, Blakelock, the Luminists and the Hudson River School as well as Kasper David Friedrich and JMW Turner. Their light saturated abstracted landscapes and marinescapes are executed in a contemporary idiom that is a fresh departure from the brutal urban, sensationalistic styles now current. They provide an atmosphere of quiet contemplation and reverie. The sensitive poetry of these works serves as a welcome antidote to the frantic paced, characteristic of the aggressive battles of New York City life.

The “Magic Hour” is that special time between daylight and darkness when the sky changes from blue to violet tones, as the sun sets and the moon rises. It is evoked in poetry as well as in painting as a moment of reflection and illumination. It is a brief moment because of the quality of the light at this time of day. In Scotland this time of day and the attendant light quality is known as gloaming.

The Magic Hour, also known in French as l’heure bleue, refers to a specific photographic effect achieved with a diffuse quality of light at the end of the day and is associated with a poignant romanticism. Typically, lighting will be softer and warm in hue, and shadows will be more pronounced, as a result of the sun being so close to parallel with the horizon. During the Magic Hour, highlights are less likely to be overexposed. In landscape photography, the warm color of the low sun is considered desirable to enhance the colors of the scene.
