This palm-sized watercolor of a luminous yellow moon was painted during a 2022 trip to Mexico City. While the city’s modern sky, much like Brooklyn’s, makes stargazing difficult, the moon remains powerfully present. At the anthropology museum, ancient astronomical artifacts prompted me to imagine how people experienced the night sky in the distant past, before light pollution changed our relationship with the cosmos. The Spanish title ‘Llena’- meaning full- matched how I felt while taking all of this in.
