This custom commission was painted for installation aboard P&O’s cruise ship Arvia. Measuring 52 x 150 inches, Shroud Lines features thousands of hand-painted circles in white, gold, and deep blue. The painting was conceived as one of a pair with Stay Lines, both inspired by the dazzling sweeps of light that appear when the sun is low over open water near my Brooklyn home. Shroud lines was the first of the pair to be completed.
Working with an art consultant, I developed a design to complement the elegant atmosphere of one of the ship’s premier dining venues. I worked with plans for the space, color swatches, and a clear deadline in hand–all while remaining true to my vision as an artist. This process is a little different from what I do in the studio much of the time, but it was nice to be able to work so expansively with one of my favorite motifs. So expansively that I needed to extend one wall in the studio so I could see both canvases at once!
