This watercolor was made at sunrise during my 2019 stay at the Silver Bay YMCA as part of the New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). From my morning along the shore of Slim Point I drank the coffee I had filled a thermos with the night before and worked quickly in the rapidly changing light to create this note to self about the warm and enveloping sense of light that I felt in this place.
As part of this morning ritual, I also propped up my phone and made a timelapse of the sunrise. While I don’t have precise enough notes to be sure which video goes with which watercolors, the one below from the morning of July 25th looks like a pretty good match.
This painting was included in 2026 the exhibit Layered: Beyond the Surface at Blank Space in Seoul.
