This watercolor was painted in the pre-dawn half-light on the shore of Lake George in the summer of 2022. The crescent moon resonated what I was experiencing at this point in things. A sliver of light and life was present for all of us on this side of the pandemic, but it would take another cycle or two before things started to feel normal.
When I returned to the studio I experimented with gilding elements of a the watercolors I had made at the lake. Here I applied gold leaf to the crescent and star as a way to honor the moment the painting represents – imperfect but lovely, too.
This painting was included in 2026 the exhibit Layered: Beyond the Surface at Blank Space in Seoul.
