The forest at night inspired me from an early age. I was lucky to grow up at the edge of a friendly patch of woods where giant oak trees created a magnificent outdoor room. Many pleasant hours were spent there. But after dark something just past the first line of trees shifted and a completely different and far more mysterious mood set in.
I’ve returned to this scene many times in my paintings. This painting, Thicket, is one that I think is especially successful. The combination of gold leaf and deep blue oil paint is irresistible to me, and here it gives a real feeling of something magic happening among nocturnal trees.
